1   General
1.1   Q: Where should a site be indexed?
A: Sites are listed in topic-specific categories, and are further classified as either avs, free, or membership.
by mapfan at 2006-09-25 05:18:38
1.2   Q: Do I have to accept all sites submitted to my cat?
A: No. In evaluating any site, you can do one of four things: 1. Add it. 2. Move it to another category. 3. Delete it. 4. Keep it as unreviewed. Further information in this FAQ expands on these options.

No site is guaranteed a listing. Selecting appropriate sites requires using your discretion. Editors are expected to maintain editorial integrity, keep the ODP's broader goals and mission in mind, and always employ good common sense.

1.3   Q: What should I consider when adding a site?
A: First, make sure the site is on-topic for the category. Second, consider the factors listed in the Image Gallery Sites section of the Adult Site Listing Guidelines. Those recommendations cover both what we'd like the category to contain overall, and how each site might contribute toward that goal.
by mapfan at 2006-09-25 05:29:27
1.4   Q: What is considered "appropriate" content?
A: Content relating to the category and in sufficient amount. Normally 20 reasonably large images is considered a minimum. In a sparsely populated category, fewer or smaller images are sometimes acceptable. In categories with many listings, the standards for a minimally acceptable listing may be higher. See the Image Gallery Sites section of the Adult Site Listing Guidelines for further details.
by mapfan at 2006-09-25 06:50:21
1.5   Q: Can a site with misleading links be listed?
A: Misleading links have link text and/or link graphics that misrepresent the content at the link's destination. An example would be a page offering three links, titled Gallery 1, Gallery 2, and Gallery 3. However, the link titled Gallery 3 goes to something other than a gallery. A site should not be listed if there are substantial misleading links. However, a site with a minor problem could be acceptable if the potential listing offers a significant type of material not otherwise available. Editors are expected to use their discretion.
by mapfan at 2006-09-25 05:35:33
1.6   Q: How about a site with blind links?
A: The guidelines say that we prefer listings in which "when the user points a cursor over each link, the status bar (or mouse-over display, if provided) shows the destination url accurately." Use your discretion. Avoid adding listings with multiple and major blind links. On the other hand, if a potential listing offers a type of material not otherwise available, it might be worth including it even if there are some minor blind links.
by mapfan at 2006-09-25 05:36:52
1.7   Q: Is it OK if more than one listing from the same domain appears in the same category?
A: Generally we avoid multiple listings from the same domain in the same category, but there are some cases where it is acceptable. If the domain is a public host such as redclouds.com, where the individual listings represent different sources, it's fine. These are known as "hosting deeplinks" and are discussed in To Deeplink or Not to Deeplink. The other case where it is acceptable involves small categories that otherwise would not have a reasonable amount of content. Including 2, or even 3, deeplinks from the same domain could possibly make sense in a case like that. In some cases there is a "hub" link that covers all material a domain has on a particular topic. If that is the case, we use the link of the hub.
by mapfan at 2006-09-25 05:38:01
1.8   Q: If a site contains any of the negative features as listed in the guidelines, am I allowed to list it?
A: In the overwhelming majority of cases, sites with the types of negative features outlined in the guidelines should not be listed. The guidelines do not absolutely prohibit them in order to ensure that editors may use their discretion in unusual cases. If you add a site that includes negative features mentioned in the guidelines, please leave an editor note mentioning those features, and explaining why you thought it was worth adding the site despite those features.

Examples:

Standard editor note reasons for rejecting sites would include
1. "images are overwhelmed by the advertisements and affiliate links." Or,
2. "misleading link text on the links." Or,
3. "site disables user's status bar, not revealing the destination of urls accurately."

Meanwhile, an editor note for accepting a site with some problems might read
1. "I normally wouldn't add a site with this high an advertising-to-image ratio, but in this case the images are unusually high-quality for the category." Or,
2. "The 'Next Gallery' link on page 4 is misleading in that it goes to a gallery on a different domain. However, the other links are all fine, and the quantity of the images offered is unusually large for the category."

1.9   Q: The guidelines recommend not adding minimal-quality sites "where the goal of a high-quality, content-rich category can be achieved by listing only higher-quality material." At what point does an editor decide that for a specific category it's appropriate to reject or remove "minimal-quality" sites?
A: It depends on the type of category. For example, categories focused on a specific individual (such as categories within Porn Stars) reach a state of being content-rich with far fewer listings than categories that contain sites of many different models (such as Big Beautiful Women). Before concluding that it is appropriate to remove or reject "minimal sites" check in the "editors only" section of the category charter to see if there is a link to a forum thread where this category was discussed. Otherwise, open a forum thread to get consensus among other adult editors.

Remember that by "minimal quality" we are referring to sites that still have sufficient content and quality that they would be acceptable to list in the category if it did not have large amounts of higher-quality content.

1.10   Q: In cases where a domain includes a hub page linking to the various image gallery sites on that domain about a leaf topic, is it appropriate to list the hub page instead of listing one or more of the individual sites?
A: Yes. In a case like that, it is both acceptable and preferable to list the hub page. However, if there are problems with the hub page that make it a poor candidate for listing, it is acceptable reject the hub in favor of listing the url of an individual site from that domain, or, in rare cases where the category is short on content, 2 or 3 sites from that domain.

1.11   Q: When should I move a site?
A: If the site is not appropriate for your category, do not simply delete it. Determine the appropriate category and move it there for editor review. If you don't know the exact category, it's OK to move it to a higher level category that encompasses the possibilities.
by mapfan at 2006-09-25 05:45:58
1.12   Q: When should I delete a site or submission?
A: If a site is already indexed elsewhere in the directory, do not add it. Do not add sites that do not meet current listings standards. This includes mirror sites, affiliates, doorways, and sites that lack sufficient content. If you cannot back out of a site without causing numerous exit consoles to sprout up, making it impossible to leave the site or causing your browser to crash, delete it. Listed sites that do not meet current standards should be removed. If you are in doubt about removing a listed site, ask in the forums.
by mapfan at 2006-09-25 05:48:18
1.13   Q: What is a mirror site?
A: A mirror site is an exact same copy of a site using a different URL. It will have the same sign-up codes and the same content once you get there.
by corter at 1999-10-10 01:39:56
1.14   Q: What is an affiliate site?
A: An affiliate site is a site which sells memberships to another site without real content of its own. A good way to spot these is to look at the sign-up links. If the link is to another domain and has a numeric or cgi ending, then it is an affiliate site. An example of what this would look like would be for a link from http://www.mysite.com to go to http://www.cybererotica.com/ad/welcome.cgi/raw_3526/K. Note: just because a site has an affiliate link on it does not mean it must be deleted. If the site also provides sufficient content of its own as well as an affiliate link, it is OK to index the site.
by corter at 1999-10-10 01:44:37
1.15   Q: What is a doorway?
A: A doorway is a unique entry or portal going to a common main site. A webmaster of a teen site, for example, may create a new front page which by word choice in the text, title, and description would attract Asian traffic. When someone goes to this "Asian" site, however, it leads to the original teen site.

Spotting doorway sites is not always easy. One warning flare would be to see a subdomain, such as http://www.asian.teensex.com/. However, many legitimately unique sites use sub-domains, so you need to actually check where each one leads. Another warning flare would be moving from one domain to another after the initial one or two pages. For example, you click on http://www.someasiansite.com. The site asks you to continue, and you move to http://www.someteensite.com.

1.16   Q: What is the format for indexing a site?
A: The title of the site should usually be the actual title a surfer sees, not necessarily that which was submitted. The exception here is a title too obviously trying to reach the top of the list. "Aaron's Awesome Ass" is marginally OK, "Aaaaaaaas Pictures" is not acceptable. All major words in the title should be capitalized. The description should be a clear, concise statement of what is inside. The first letter of the description is capitalized, only proper nouns are capitalized after that. End each description with a period. Avoid hype and keyword lists. Each avs site must have the name of the avs in brackets (see avs section). If the site is in a category which is not broken down into AVS, Free, and Members, then add [Membership] after paysites and [AVS: name of avs] after avs sites.

1.17   Q: What is a keyword list?
A: A keyword list is a group of words, generally separated by commas, which try to bring in hits. A description such as "sex, porn, lesbian. hot, erotic, teen, Asian" is inappropriate. However sites which have galleries of several types might have a description such as "Asian, teen and, lesbian picture galleries along with chat and cams.
by corter at 1999-10-10 02:02:46
1.18   Q: Do I have to accept the title and/or description as it is submitted?
A: No! Make all necessary changes to reflect ODP style, spelling, and punctuation.
by hotpink at 1999-12-24 01:58:39
1.19   Q: If I don't like a site, can I delete it or give it a bad description?
A: We look at sites to see if they meet the ODP guidelines, not to see if we like it or not. So, we list all qualified sites. We also do not editorialize the descriptions. "Lousy site of ugly Latinas" does not cut it. Keep the descriptions objective, not subjective.
by hotpink at 1999-12-24 01:59:47
1.20   Q: What about sites that are a single page of thumbnails?
A: Sites that consist of a single page, with direct links to a set of images, are not listed.

2   AVSs
2.1   Q: What is an AVS?
A: An age verification service is a method purportedly used to ensure that only adults get access to a site. Having a credit card is taken as proof of age. AVSs are a way for smaller sites to band together to offer the surfer a wide variety of sites and a large amount of content. This works in the same way as a co-op works. Sites band together through the AVS company and offer the total content of all member sites to prospective members. Any member of a particular AVS can gain access to any member site of that AVS at no additional fee.
by hotpink at 1999-12-25 00:29:08
2.2   Q: How do I list that a site is from a particular avs?
A: Within an avs category, put the name of the avs in brackets after the description like this .... [AgeCheck]. In a general category in which AVS, Free, and Members are not broken out, use this format .....[AVS: AgeCheck]
by corter at 1999-10-10 02:19:04
2.3   Q: Some AVSs in some categories have their own subcat. Why is this?
A: Within any one category, if ten or more sites are using the same avs, then break that avs out into its own subcat.
by hotpink at 1999-12-25 00:29:21
2.4   Q: What are the correct names for the different AVSs?
A: See the Adult FAQ for information on correct category names and tags to use.
by rl2341 at 2001-11-27 15:08:36
2.5   Q: Aren't Adult Check and Adult Check Gold the same AVS?
A: While AVS have premium services, they should all fall under the same category structure. You may sort sites from Adult Check Gold into it's own "Gold" category, under the Adult Check category, when you have a minimum of ten listings.
by rl2341 at 2001-11-27 15:12:27
2.6   Q: What if a site uses more than one AVS?
A: If there are two separate AVS pages that lead to the same content, only list the first one submitted. If the same entry page lists two AVSs that can be used, then list them both: [Adult Check, UGAS], for example. If there are three or more AVSs, then use the standard tag [Multiple AVS] (for AVS categories) or [AVS: Multiple] (for non-AVS categories.)

If there are more than ten sites in an AVS category using multiple (two or more) AVSs, then they should be split off into a subcat named Multiple, sorted "above the line".

3   Category Charters
3.1   Q: What do I use as a Submission Notice when editing my category charter?
A: Here's a suggestion:

Before submitting any sites to the Adult/Image_Galleries category, read the section in Site Listing Guidelines titled Image Gallery Sites to understand the standards editors use when evaluating sites.

If the site is a membership site, remember to include an email address when filling out the submission form. Editors must review the membership area and will be emailing the submitter for a username/password, in order to complete this review. You may include the username/password with your submission.

by mapfan at 2006-09-25 06:03:40
3.2   Q: What do I use as Category Guidelines?
A: This section is for information visible only to editors. The contents should not conflict with any official guidelines, but may cover unique issues relevant to the category.

For example, the overall guidelines for Image Galleries say that sites with a level of content that might be acceptable in some Image Galleries categories will not be listed in Image Galleries categories "where the goal of a the goal of a high-quality, content-rich category can be achieved by listing only higher-quality material." With that in mind, this is a good place for editors to make relevant comments. For example, an editor who has examined the contents of the category may want to leave a note as to its overall quality, to help future editors judge what level of quality they should look for when evaluating additional sites.
