1   Q: Do I need a license to use these radio services?
A: FRS does not require a license. FRS Rule 1 provides you authority to operate a FRS unit in places where the FCC regulates radio communications, as long as you use only an unmodified FCC type accepted FRS unit.

GMRS does require that you have a license. One license covers an entire family, making GMRS a better choice for longer range family communication than amateur (also called 'ham') radio.

3   Q: What frequencies do GMRS radios use?
A: GMRS shares the first 7 channels with FRS but also adds 8 frequencies for both direct (simplex) and repeater use: 1 - 462.550 MHz, 2 - 462.575, 3 - 462.600, 4 - 462.625, 5 - 462.650, 6 - 462.675, 7 - 462.700, 8 - 462.725 MHz.

Repeater input frequencies are 5 MHz above the output frequencies.
