Profile
Is anything sadder than the death of the last speaker of a language?I study Native American languages. I have a very sad job.
Five Osage speakers remain in Oklahoma; two Siuslaw speakers in Oregon; one Serrano speaker in California. In 50 years forty languages will have died forever in this country.
My other job, the one I don't get paid for, is seeing that the rest of our languages do not follow them. That job is much less sad.
